Cloud Computing

I have been trying to do a little research to figure out what cloud computing is. The computers my wife and I are using seem to be just about to go out on us and before we go out and throw down the big money, to replace our computers, we try to make sure we wont regret it. If cloud computing is something that would work for us and is the direction that technology is moving then that would be good to know now. So if any of you have an opinion on this please let us know.

I do not think that cloud computing is something that will take off for the average household user. As you know, many companies and even school districts are entering the game of outsourced storage as a source of new income. Many companies and schools have huge mainframes and databases with open space, so why not lease it out. The problem is see with it is both the cost, and practicability of this technology. One, what happens if your internet goes down? If you store all your information online, your computer becomes a paper weight. Two, I’m not entirely sold on the security of these clouds. Mosey for example offers online storage and backup. You have no control over their security. 99% of what you store on your computer is small files. And the large files are things that you wouldn’t run on the cloud anyway (i.e. MS Office) Run an external hard drive and keep your files at home. There is no doubt in my mind that small to medium size business are going to take advantage of the cloud. In comparison to an “in home” IT infrastructure, the cost of the cloud is small. Companies no longer have to worry about IT like they have in the past. They can just pay someone else to do it for them. Also the availability of information for the end user is a great benefit for companies, but not very necessary for the average household user.
I found on site offering 20G for $5/month. That doesn’t seem like a good deal to me.
In my personal opinion, cloud computing is cool, for sure, but not needed at home.

Well done. I think you have convinced me. I wasn't very sold on the idea because of security. Though I don't have much in the way of valuable files, I do prefer privacy. Additional monthly costs are a bummer as well. Thank you for your input.
